Same! I've always wondered if he thought Nanny and DanDan were pronouncing it "Ache" because of their Texas accents, like they did in pronouncing Aunt like "ain't." I have some theories....
I’ve been out of the country for almost six weeks and am returning tomorrow. It’s all a little overwhelming. I’m glad I decided to read your Next Thing rather than trying to finally post something on Facebook for the first time since the trip began. Now I can thank you and Carrie for the sound advice (permission?) to just lower the standards and get going- Cheers to you, Beth!
Kim, you will forever be my best editor, so these words feel like a special honor. Someday, when I write my book, I'll ask if you're available for hire.
I'm glad you putting yourself out there and helping others. I for one look forward to learning from your vast knowledge. It was great meeting you last night and the writing workshop at Lark and Owl. I had a great time. You are a great facilitator.
Great piece! Love that your whole premise of this Substack is "with the intention of chronicling my adventures in reinventing myself after losing my full-time faculty position to COVID in May of 2020." I feel it was some version of a Great Resignation/Reprioritization (forced or otherwise) for so many, and while it makes for some truly gut-wrenching and hustle-filled moments/seasons, it seems chock full of material for writing. And I love the reminder to lower our standards keep writing... Thanks!
This is incredibly inspiring! Thanks for sharing this on Facebook, now I want to read DFW and write! -Leah
Another super read Beth. I’d not heard about Lindel’s name research. Now I’m curious how your dad came up with the “the A is silent” idea.

I didn’t know they pronounced it differently, so really interested…
I've missed you and wondered what was up! So happy to read news from you again. Great writing, even if you claim to have lowered your standards. :-)
Thank you! I'm delighted to have you as a reader.
